THE STATE OF THE KENYAN SOCIAL HEALTH INSURANCE SCHEME

Much has been said about the SHA system in Kenya. In my opinion, NHIF was working better.

Before you invest in a hospital expecting SHA to support the cost of hospitalisation, know this

  1. The delays, inefficiencies, and pre-authorisation drama can get you into a lot of trouble.
  2. Doctors have very little say in the SHA administration. Various doctors’ associations have been asked to submit their opinions on payments but have not. The exception to this has been the Kenya Renal Association. As nephrologists we have seen the benefits of fighting for the patient to get free dialysis both in the Public and Private sectors. We are now working towards free transplants paid for by SHA
  3. leaving the decision making to government officers will inevitably result in errors and misconceptions that is why doctors must involve themselves in SHA issues till we shape it to benefit patients and medical providers alike. Many small clinics and Hospitals owed millions by SHA are forced to close because of indebtedness.
  4. Fraudulent practices are there for sure, and seriously, only doctors can stop these practices by TAKING CHARGE AND AN ACTIVE ROLE in directing SHA processes.
  5. Medical insurance in Kenya needs a deep, reflective review. We have enough resources and it is possible to streamline it to benefit everybody.

What do you think? Do you believe SHA is operating effectively? is your opinion? is SHA working or not?
